22 Nov Mindfulness, Meditation, and a Modern Om Movement
Imagine if you could close your eyes, and be anywhere you want. Anywhere in the world. Would you pause for a moment to go there?
And what if we told you that with practice, this is completely possible? “Meditation is a practice where you actually are able to be completely expansive,” explains Myk Likhov, founder of Miami-based mindfulness company Modern OM, “you can be anywhere when you close your eyes.” Essentially, you reap the benefits of being someplace else simply by tapping into that mindset, without ever moving.
With Modern OM, Likhov is building a company and community that aims to raise the vibration of the world. The products are inspired by the ancient wisdom of energy, and blend that knowledge of the seven chakras with a color system that corresponds to seven different intentions: Compassion, Connection, Expression, Insight, Passion, Purpose, and Vitality. Whether it be a set of mala beads, a candle, or other life good, each product is meant to serve as a reminder – a visual cue to take action.
“The core of what we’re doing is bringing mindfulness into the every day life,” Likhov says. In a world of so much noise, so many distractions, and a propensity towards information overload, finding an inner peace has become a non-negotiable. And the beauty is that it starts wherever you happen to be at that current moment.
But how do you do it? It’s not as tough as you might think.
First, abandon all notions that meditation means you must stop your mind from having any thoughts. We are human, and this is simply not possible, nor the point.
Second, find a comfortable place and position to sit. It could be in a chair, on your couch, or even in your car if you need a moment of zen before heading out into peak hour traffic.
Third, focus on your breath. When your mind starts to wander (it will) and you start thinking about that thing you have to do, or did you call that person back (or should you just email?), you’ll re-center and bring it all back to the breath.
Fourth, sit quietly and observe. Observe your breath, observe your thoughts, but refrain from becoming too “involved.” Watch them pass by with as little attachment as possible. And trust that like any skill, you will improve with practice.
But our favorite? Instead of letting things pop into your brain at random, offer a little guidance, and transport yourself to another time and place. Picture yourself walking in Paris, the smells of baguettes in the oven wafting from the patisseries as you wander through the early morning streets. Or the touch of sun and a salt water breeze on your skin as you sail through crystal blue Caribbean waters. It’s a feeling you’re capturing, that same one you get from actually doing that thing and having that experience. And the mood enhancements can be just as powerful.
To travel in the mind’s eye… and to actually feel as if you were there, through memory or imagination. If that’s not pure magic, then we don’t know what is.
